10 Days of Prayer & Fasting

1 – 10 January, every year.

10 Days of Prayer is a fast. Whether or not there is a city-wide prayer meeting near you, everyone can enter fasting during these 10 days at some level. How — or if — you fast is between you and God, but you are invited to fast. Fasting, when it is done in the right spirit, is something that God sees and rewards (Matthew 7:18).

What does it mean to fast?

Fasting is:

  • Giving up lawful physical needs and pleasures in order to pursue spiritual needs and pleasures.
  • An embodied way of humbling ourselves before God and an expression of mourning.
  • A physical form of prayer — an act of faith in God.
  • One of three “righteous deeds” commended by Jesus in Matthew 6 (prayer, fasting, charity).
  • An expression of our desire for the return of Christ (Matthew 9:15).

Fasting is done voluntarily, not under compulsion. The type of fast you enter into is between you and God.

Daily Reflections

Ten days, ten themes

Day 1 · Reflection

2 Corinthians 1:20

Reflect today on how God has carried you. Remember those times when God clearly answered your prayers and give thanks.

Day 2 · Revelation

Exodus 33:18–19

Pray that God would reveal himself and his glory as we seek him over the next 10 days.

Day 3 · The Holy Spirit

Acts 1:8

Pray for the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit to be known among us, because without him, our efforts are useless.

Day 4 · Spiritual Growth

Ephesians 1:17

Pray that we would be a people who grow in the knowledge and worship of God. Ask that we would walk in the fullness of the knowledge of God.

Day 5 · The Church and Mission

John 17:20–21

Pray for unity in diversity among the members and partners of our church. Ask God to give us a gospel-love that transcends all our differences.

Day 6 · Wisdom and Discernment

Proverbs 3:5–6

God, give us a desire for Your Word as the true source of wisdom and a heart of receptivity to the teaching and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Day 7 · Perseverance

Isaiah 40:31

God, give us the wisdom to see joy even in suffering, since we know suffering leads to a more mature and complete faith.

Day 8 · Faith and Hope

Psalm 9:10, 28:7 & Romans 15:13

Jesus Christ is the true hope of the world. God, fill us with more faith and hope in this life and the life we are promised.

Day 9 · Reconciliation

Romans 15:7

Enable us to resemble Jesus in how we show love and respect to all people. Give us your heart of inclusion for every people, tongue and tribe.

Day 10 · Families and Marriages

Matthew 6:13; 1 Corinthians 13:4–7

God, give us the vision you have for our families so we will be protected from the evil one and we will not be ignorant of the enemy's schemes.
